Najah Salam Life and Music
Najah Salam: Life, Music, and the Voice of Arab Patriotism
Introduction
Najah Salam was one of the most accomplished and versatile Arab singers of the twentieth century. A Lebanese-born singer and film actress who also became closely identified with Egypt, she possessed a powerful voice capable of performing classical Arabic poetry, Lebanese folklore, Bedouin songs, romantic melodies, religious chants, patriotic anthems, mawwal, and music from the Gulf.
Her career lasted for more than half a century. She recorded songs in several Arabic dialects, appeared in approximately fifteen musical films, performed throughout the Arab world, and worked with composers such as Riyad al-Sunbati, Muhammad al-Mougi, Muhammad Abdel Wahab, Philemon Wehbi, Sami al-Sidawi, Muhammad Salman, Muhammad al-Karim, Tariq Abdul Hakim, and her father, Muhyiddin Salam.
Najah became especially famous for her patriotic music. Her performance of “Ya Aghla Ism fil-Wujud, Ya Misr” — “O Egypt, Most Precious Name in Existence” remains one of Egypt’s best-known national songs. Yet her repertoire extended far beyond patriotic music. Behind the commanding national voice was a sensitive interpreter of love songs, folklore, devotional music, and sophisticated maqam-based vocal art.
Early Life in Beirut
Najah Muhyiddin Salam was born in Beirut on March 13, 1931. She grew up in a respected family that brought together religion, literature, journalism, and music.
Her grandfather, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Salam, was a distinguished religious scholar, writer, and official associated with Lebanon’s Dar al-Fatwa. Her father, Muhyiddin Salam, was a composer, oud player, writer, and important contributor to the early development of music at Lebanese Radio.
The Salam family home was frequently visited by musicians, poets, intellectuals, religious figures, and journalists. Najah therefore encountered different forms of Arabic language, poetry, music, and public discourse from an early age.
Her upbringing was conservative, but it was also intellectually open. She attended the Makassed girls’ school and later the boarding school of the Sisters of Zahret al-Ihsan in Beirut. At school, she found opportunities to sing in annual celebrations and children’s radio programs.
She eventually performed publicly at events at Junior College and the American University of Beirut during the mid-1940s. These appearances revealed a young voice of unusual strength and maturity.
Learning from Her Father
Muhyiddin Salam was Najah’s first and most important teacher. He instructed her in Arabic singing, trained her ear, corrected her pronunciation, and introduced her to maqam, rhythm, poetry, and the disciplined relationship between words and melody.
Because of his position in Lebanese radio, Najah met many leading artists from Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt. She listened to singers and composers rehearse and learned how professional music was constructed.
Her father initially hesitated to allow her to pursue a public career. Singing professionally was still viewed with suspicion by many conservative families. Najah, however, persisted. Once Muhyiddin recognized the seriousness of her ambition, he became her teacher and artistic supervisor.
Her religious education also shaped her voice. She studied Qur’anic recitation, which strengthened her command of classical Arabic pronunciation, breath control, melodic ornamentation, and dignified delivery. These qualities later distinguished her performances of qasida, patriotic poetry, and religious song. Lebanese Army
The First Journey to Egypt
Najah accompanied her father to Egypt during the late 1940s. Cairo was then the center of Arabic cinema, broadcasting, recording, and musical composition.
During this visit, she met some of the most important figures in Arab music. Muhammad Abdel Wahab reportedly praised the strength and value of her voice and encouraged her father to support her career.
She also encountered the artistic world of Umm Kulthum, Asmahan, Farid al-Atrash, Zakariya Ahmad, Riyad al-Sunbati, and other major musicians. Cairo broadened her ambitions. She began to imagine a career that would extend beyond Lebanese radio to Arab cinema and the great concert stages.
Najah returned to Lebanon determined to become a professional singer.
“Hawwil Ya Ghannam”
In 1949, Najah recorded one of her first major songs, “Hawwil Ya Ghannam” — “Move Along, Shepherd.” Written in a Bedouin-influenced dialect and presented as a vocal dialogue, it became an immediate success.
The song displayed several qualities that would remain central to her career:
- Clear pronunciation
- Rhythmic precision
- Strong projection
- Dramatic interaction
- Easy movement between folk simplicity and vocal ornamentation
- A natural feeling for different Arabic dialects
She soon recorded “Ya Jarihit Qalbi,” written and composed by Sami al-Sidawi. In 1950, she recorded “Ala Masrahak Ya Dunya” for Lebanese Radio.
These early successes established Najah as one of the leading new voices in Lebanon and Syria. Records bearing her name circulated widely, and she began receiving invitations to perform throughout the region.
Early Arab Tours
Even before establishing herself in Egyptian cinema, Najah traveled extensively.
She performed for Ramallah Radio and gave concerts in Bethlehem, Nablus, Jerusalem, and Amman. Some of these appearances supported Palestinian charitable and national causes. She sang “Ya Za’iran Mahda ‘Isa,” a poem by Boulos Salameh set to music by her father.
She also performed in Baghdad and appeared on Iraqi Radio. In Syria, she sang in Damascus and Aleppo and continued her musical education with distinguished masters, including Omar al-Batsh and Sheikh Ali al-Darwish.
Omar al-Batsh was one of the great composers and authorities on the Aleppine muwashshah tradition. Contact with this musical environment deepened Najah’s understanding of maqam, classical vocal forms, rhythmic cycles, and the relationship between composition and improvisation.
These travels helped make her a genuinely pan-Arab artist. Long before the term became part of her patriotic image, she had learned to perform for audiences from the Levant, Iraq, Palestine, Jordan, and Egypt.
A Powerful and Versatile Voice
Najah Salam possessed a large, resonant voice with considerable range. It could express feminine tenderness and playful charm, but it also carried authority, dignity, and dramatic power.
Her voice united qualities that do not always appear together:
- Strength without harshness
- Clear diction without stiffness
- Classical discipline with popular accessibility
- Flexibility across several dialects
- Ability to sustain long phrases
- Mastery of melodic ornamentation
- Command of both solo and orchestral performance
- Strong emotional presence
Riyad al-Sunbati admired her ability to perform demanding compositions and reportedly regarded her voice as suitable for works that many singers would find difficult.
Najah herself greatly respected al-Sunbati’s school of composition. His long melodic lines, classical maqam development, and careful treatment of poetry matched her vocal training and serious artistic temperament.
Mastery of Maqam and Mawwal
Najah was particularly accomplished in the mawwal. She treated it not as a decorative introduction but as an independent form of musical expression.
A successful mawwal requires more than vocal power. The singer must understand the character of a maqam, develop phrases gradually, create tension and release, move between registers, and arrive at points of repose without losing the emotional thread.
Najah could perform mawwal in Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian, Bedouin, and Gulf contexts. Her improvisations balanced technical command with meaningful expression.
Wadi‘ al-Safi admired her abilities and reportedly called her “al-Wadi‘a al-Safiya,” a playful feminine variation on his own name. The compliment recognized her command of the mountain voice and mawwal tradition.
Lebanese Folk Music
Najah played an important role in spreading Lebanese song throughout the Arab world. Her recordings appeared during the period when musicians were actively developing a modern musical identity for the newly independent country.
Her Lebanese repertoire included village songs, zajal, popular dance music, mountain-style singing, and romantic works in Lebanese dialect.
Among her well-known popular songs are:
- “Mayyil Ya Ghzayyil” —
- “Barhoum Hakini” —
- “‘A Nar Qalbi” —
- “Tal al-Qamar” —
- “Matna w ‘Ishna” —
- “‘A Mawrid al-Ghizlan” —
Her delivery preserved the natural accents of Lebanese speech while giving the melodies the projection and refinement needed for radio, cinema, and large theaters.
Collaboration with Philemon Wehbi
Philemon Wehbi composed several important songs for Najah Salam. His instinctive understanding of Lebanese folklore suited her flexible and powerful voice.
One of their best-known collaborations was “Barhoum Hakini.” The song combines popular Lebanese language, memorable melody, humor, and dramatic character.
Philemon also composed “‘A Nar Qalbi,” with zajal poetry by As‘ad al-Saba‘li. These works belong to the movement that brought the Lebanese village song into professional broadcasting and commercial recording.
Najah’s interpretations differed from both Sabah and Fairuz, two other great singers of Philemon’s melodies. Sabah emphasized theatrical energy and celebration; Fairuz revealed refinement and lyrical restraint. Najah brought vocal authority, folk authenticity, and a strong feeling for mawwal and classical Arabic expression.
Success in Egyptian Cinema
Najah moved more fully into Egyptian cinema during the early 1950s. Her first completed film was Ala Kayfak, directed by Helmy Rafla and released in 1952. The cast included Ismail Yassin, Leila Fawzi, Tahia Carioca, and Mohsen Sarhan.
She subsequently appeared with Ismail Yassin in several popular films, including:
- Al-Dunya Lamma Tidhak — When Life Smiles
- Dastet Manadil — A Dozen Handkerchiefs
- Al-Sa‘d Wa‘d — Happiness Is Promised
- Al-Kumsariyyat al-Fatinat — The Charming Conductresses
Her films generally combined light comedy, romance, musical performance, and social situations. Najah often portrayed a cheerful and respectable young woman whose singing became central to the story.
She also appeared in:
- Angham Habibi
- Fi Qalbi Nar
- Antar Yaghzu al-Sahra’
- Marhaban Ayyuha al-Hubb
- Ya Salam ‘al-Hubb
- Sirr al-Hawiya
- Anta ‘Umri
- Al-Shaytan
Najah participated in around fifteen musical films between 1952 and 1969. Although she was an effective actress, she consistently described herself as a singer first and an actress second.
Muhammad Salman: Artistic and Personal Partnership
Najah’s life and career became closely connected with Lebanese singer, actor, composer, writer, and director Muhammad Salman.
They appeared together in Al-Sa‘d Wa‘d in 1955 and subsequently collaborated on several films and songs. Salman wrote, composed, directed, or prepared works in which Najah appeared, including Angham Habibi and Marhaban Ayyuha al-Hubb.
Their marriage lasted approximately thirteen years, but their friendship and artistic relationship continued long after their separation. They had two daughters.
Najah later spoke respectfully of Salman’s creativity and free spirit. Their partnership represented a meeting of two Lebanese artists who worked extensively in Egypt while remaining closely connected to Lebanese and pan-Arab culture.
“Ya Aghla Ism fil-Wujud”
Najah Salam’s most famous patriotic song is “Ya Aghla Ism fil-Wujud, Ya Misr” — “O Egypt, Most Precious Name in Existence.”
Composed by Muhammad al-Mougi, the song became deeply associated with Egyptian national identity. Najah’s performance combined emotional warmth, vocal power, and ceremonial grandeur.
Although she was born in Lebanon, Egyptian audiences accepted her patriotic singing as sincere. She did not sound like a visiting performer merely praising another country. Her years in Egypt, friendships with Egyptian artists, film career, and commitment to Arab unity gave the performance personal conviction.
The song remains part of Egyptian national celebrations and continues to be performed by choirs, students, and contemporary singers.
The Suez Crisis and the Voice of Resistance
Najah’s national reputation reached its height during the 1956 Suez Crisis, when Britain, France, and Israel attacked Egypt following President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s nationalization of the Suez Canal.
Her song “Watanuna fi Khatar” — “Our Homeland Is in Danger” was broadcast by Voice of the Arabs shortly after the attack began. Its urgency and force suited the atmosphere of resistance.
She also performed:
- “Ana al-Nil Maqbaratun lil-Ghuzat” — “I Am the Nile, a Graveyard for Invaders”
- “Labbayka Ya ‘Alam al-‘Uruba” — “At Your Call, Banner of Arabism”
- “Ya Aghla Ism fil-Wujud” — “O Most Precious Name in Existence”
“Watanuna fi Khatar” was reportedly described by Gamal Abdel Nasser as the kind of artistic “heavy artillery” needed during the crisis. Whether understood literally or symbolically, the comment reflects the public power of her voice during that period.
Her patriotic work eventually contributed to her receiving Egyptian citizenship. Associated Press
Singing for the Arab World
Najah Salam’s patriotism was not limited to Egypt. She sang for Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Algeria, Tunisia, Iraq, Yemen, Oman, and the larger Arab homeland.
Her repertoire reflected the pan-Arab cultural ideals that were especially influential during the 1950s and 1960s.
For Palestine, she performed national poetry and benefit concerts from early in her career. For Algeria and Tunisia, she sang “Mahla al-Ghina Ba‘d al-Rasas” — “How Beautiful Is Song After the Bullets,” written by Salah Jahin and composed by Muhammad al-Mougi.
She performed “Suriyya Habibati” with Muhammad Jamal, using words and music by Muhammad Salman. She also sang works supporting Yemen and other Arab causes.
Najah believed that the singer had a public responsibility. A national song was not an occasional commercial item in her repertoire; it was a central part of her artistic identity.
Songs for Lebanon
Despite her close relationship with Egypt, Najah remained deeply attached to Lebanon.
Her Lebanese patriotic repertoire included:
- “Lubnan Durrat al-Sharq” — “Lebanon, Jewel of the East”
- “Allah Ya Lubnan Ma Ajmalak” — “O Lebanon, How Beautiful You Are”
- “Lubnan”, based on poetry by al-Akhtal al-Saghir
- “Ya Jaysh Lubnan al-Kabir” — “O Great Lebanese Army”
- A qasida commemorating Qana after the 1996 attack
In these works, Lebanon appears as both a beautiful homeland and a country repeatedly tested by conflict.
Her Lebanese national songs generally use formal Arabic and broad orchestral language, giving them a ceremonial character. This distinguishes them from her lighter Lebanese folk repertoire.
Riyad al-Sunbati and the Classical Song
Riyad al-Sunbati played an important role in Najah Salam’s artistic development. He trained her voice in the subtleties of the Arabic maqam system and composed demanding works for her.
Their most famous patriotic collaboration was “Ana al-Nil Maqbaratun lil-Ghuzat.” The composition’s large melodic design, formal Arabic text, and national subject required a singer with exceptional breath control, diction, range, and authority.
Al-Sunbati’s style was rooted in classical Arabic forms, including qasida, monologue, and extended maqam development. Najah’s ability to perform his music demonstrated that she belonged not only to cinema and popular song but also to the classical tarab tradition.
She often described herself as artistically close to the Sunbati school.
Egyptian Romantic and Popular Songs
Najah’s Egyptian repertoire included romantic songs, film numbers, comic duets, and popular melodies. She sang in Egyptian dialect with fluency and natural phrasing.
Among the songs representing this side of her career were works such as:
- “Ayiz Gawabatak”
- “Ya Jarihit Qalbi”
- “Al-Dunya Lamma Tidhak”
- Songs performed in her films with Ismail Yassin and Muhammad Salman
Her Egyptian songs could be playful, tender, dramatic, or classically expressive. She did not imitate Egyptian singers; instead, she brought her own vocal strength and Lebanese background into the Egyptian idiom.
Religious Songs and Devotional Chant
Religious music formed an important part of Najah Salam’s repertoire. Her early study of Qur’anic recitation gave her a strong foundation in correct pronunciation, measured phrasing, and spiritual expression.
She performed religious chants, supplications, songs for Ramadan, praises of the Prophet, and works connected with Islamic occasions.
Unlike her playful film songs, her devotional performances were characterized by restraint and solemnity. She avoided unnecessary theatrical effects, allowing the text and maqam to carry the spiritual meaning.
Her religious repertoire illustrates the breadth of her artistry. The same singer who could perform a comic Lebanese dialogue or film song could also deliver classical Arabic verse with dignity and reverence.
Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Music
Najah was among the early non-Gulf Arab stars to perform music from Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and the Gulf with serious attention to dialect and regional style.
Her famous recording “Ya Rim Wadi Thaqif” was connected with Saudi composer Tariq Abdul Hakim. She also collaborated with Hadhrami singer-composer Abu Bakr Salem on “Min Nazratak Ya Zayn.”
These songs were not merely Egyptian or Lebanese melodies with Gulf lyrics. Najah studied their pronunciation, rhythmic character, and melodic language.
Her interest in Arabian Peninsula music broadened her pan-Arab identity and helped introduce Gulf and Yemeni styles to audiences elsewhere in the Arab world.
Major Songs
Najah Salam’s extensive repertoire includes patriotic, folk, romantic, religious, classical, and regional works. Among her most remembered songs are:
- “Ya Aghla Ism fil-Wujud”
- “Hawwil Ya Ghannam”
- “Mayyil Ya Ghzayyil”
- “Barhoum Hakini”
- “Ya Rim Wadi Thaqif”
- “Ya Jarihit Qalbi”
- “Ana al-Nil Maqbaratun lil-Ghuzat”
- “Watanuna fi Khatar”
- “Labbayka Ya ‘Alam al-‘Uruba”
- “Lubnan Durrat al-Sharq”
- “Allah Ya Lubnan Ma Ajmalak”
- “Mahla al-Ghina Ba‘d al-Rasas”
- “Suriyya Habibati”
- “‘A Nar Qalbi”
- “Tal al-Qamar”
- “Min Nazratak Ya Zayn”
These works reveal the extraordinary geographic and stylistic range of her career.
Artistic Discipline and Personal Dignity
Najah Salam was respected for her discipline, dignity, and careful choice of material. Her conservative upbringing continued to influence her professional decisions.
She sometimes rejected film scenes or roles she considered incompatible with her values. In interviews, she emphasized the importance of order, preparation, and respect for words.
A phrase associated with her artistic philosophy was:
“Speech is disorder; singing is order.”
The statement summarized her belief that music should organize language, emotion, breath, and meaning. Singing was not merely the display of a pleasant voice; it was a disciplined art requiring knowledge and responsibility.
Later Career
Najah gradually reduced her public appearances in later life but remained respected throughout Lebanon, Egypt, and the wider Arab world.
She occasionally appeared in interviews, tribute programs, and official celebrations. Her conversations revealed a detailed memory of the golden age of Arabic music and the artists with whom she had worked.
In 2018, Lebanese President Michel Aoun honored Najah and other pioneering artists during the celebration of Radio Lebanon’s eightieth anniversary.
She received numerous honors during her career, including the Lebanese Order of Merit in the rank of Knight. In 1995, she received an award from the Society Honoring Giants of Arab Art in the United States.
Death
Najah Salam died in Beirut on September 28, 2023, at the age of ninety-two. Her death marked the passing of one of the last major performers whose career had connected early Lebanese radio, golden-age Egyptian cinema, pan-Arab broadcasting, classical composition, and modern popular song. L’Orient Today
She was mourned in both Lebanon and Egypt. The response reflected her dual cultural belonging: she was a daughter of Beirut whose voice had become part of Egypt’s national musical memory.
Musical Legacy
Najah Salam’s legacy rests upon several important achievements.
A Bridge Between Lebanon and Egypt
She helped spread Lebanese dialect and folk music through Egyptian cinema while becoming an authentic interpreter of Egyptian song.
A Voice of Arab Nationalism
Her patriotic songs documented major events and aspirations of the Arab world during the mid-twentieth century.
A Master of Multiple Styles
She performed qasida, mawwal, muwashshah, religious song, folk music, film songs, romantic melodies, Bedouin music, and Gulf repertoire with unusual command.
A Guardian of Arabic Pronunciation
Her religious and literary education gave her performances exceptional clarity, particularly in classical Arabic poetry.
An Independent Artistic Personality
Although she worked with many major composers, she was never defined by a single musical school. Her identity remained broad, flexible, and unmistakably her own.
A Pioneer of Pan-Arab Repertoire
She sang convincingly in Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian, Bedouin, Saudi, Gulf, and Yemeni styles, helping audiences appreciate the diversity of Arab music.
Conclusion
Najah Salam was a complete Arab singer. Her art united the strength of the Lebanese mountain voice, the sophistication of Egyptian composition, the discipline of Qur’anic recitation, the freedom of mawwal, and the emotional force of patriotic song.
She could sing with playful charm in a light musical film and then stand before a large orchestra to deliver a national qasida. She could perform Lebanese folklore, Egyptian romance, Saudi melody, or religious supplication without losing her identity.
Her most famous patriotic songs remain symbols of resistance and national dignity, but her wider repertoire reveals an artist of remarkable breadth. Najah Salam sang for Lebanon and Egypt, but she also sang for Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Algeria, Tunisia, Yemen, and the shared cultural aspirations of the Arab world.
Her voice represented an era in which artists believed that music could entertain, educate, unite, console, and mobilize an entire people. That voice—powerful, disciplined, dignified, and deeply human—remains an enduring part of Arabic musical heritage.
